I've only had one experience visiting another school. While on a work trip I visited an Aikido school that appeared very traditional. I was asked to watch the first day and was allowed participate the next day. Everything was exquisitely formal and everyone very nice to me.

At my own class we occassionally have folks visit and our teacher asks to them to demonstrate technique right off. That seems to cool anyone off because it seems to give them respect before there is any question.

This is a totally original and interesting question. Visiting another school can be awkward. It's a good time to fall back on the basic martial art protocols of respect and humility.

A related question is whether or why or when you should visit another martial arts school. I think I'll post on it.

I train at a school which is a blend and which tends to be a big mixing bowl of different schools and approaches with a lot of visiting to and fro.
