Good review Wim,

I have that book on my shelves. I think I bought it back in the early 80s when it first came out, and there were not that many books at the time. Hard to argue with his record, but you are so right that we know better ways to train now.

Thanks Loren. It did work for him when he competed. He was one of the best fighters in the US in his time . And he obviously trained hard. But I agree with you, what if he'd had access to today's sport science? We'll never know.

My old teacher also prohibited drinking water during training. We'd do two hours of hard work under a hot roof and not a drop could touch our lips. It was one of the first things I changed when I started teaching. :-)
Another one: My dad once gave me his old science magazines form the fifties and sixties. There were ads in it for spas that offered radioactive baths. They claimed it was healthy...

Good review, Wim, and right on. I bought that book several years ago, and even then I thought the info was wrong. Thing is, it obviously worked for him. It's sort of like that question we asked in The Fighter's Body when discussing the poor diets of some of past and present champions: How good would they have been if they had followed today's current knowledge on nutrition, sleep and training?

I have an old boxing book that was written in 1910. It says that fighter's should avoid water during training and competing. Not drinking water, it says, will make you faster. You have to wonder how many readers dropped dead in the ring and gym after following that advice.
