What do you think?

By Wim

I have a tag cloud on the right column of this blog. It’s a visual representation of the different tags on my posts and how often they have been used. It’s a cool feature but I really don’t know if any of you use it at all. So here’s the Q:

Do you use it or not? Just let me know in the comments section here.

The reason I ask: I have a bunch of plug ins for this blog and I want to cut down on them to increase the quality of my WP install. So if nobody uses this feature, I’ll get rid of it.

Thanks for the feedback.

UPDATE: Given the feedback I received: the Tag cloud is outta here! :-)

I like the cloud it gives a good feel for what the blog is about. Better probably for newer folks. I get the rss feed via google reader so I usually don’t see it unless I click thru. I usually only do that if there is a video or if I am interested in the response of others to a post.

Also if I were you I would not be able to resist the temptation to use wierd and exotic words just so they appear really large in the tag cloud. Just for fun why don’t you include a bizarre phrase like “snuggle monkey” in evey post. That way it will be the largest in the cloud. Sorry could not resist.

Thanks Joe. I don’t know about using weird words though. It might attract the wrong people from the search engines. Or google might decide to bump me down the rankings.

  2. I am personally not a fan of tag clouds, and don’t use it – but that might jsut be a glitch of mine. Do you have a way of using analytics (perhaps) to see what percent of your page hits are from that tag cloud?

    • Wim says:

I’ll see if I can do that Patrick. I haven’t used Analytics like that before so I don’t know if it can be done. Could be a winner.

  3. Hi. Love your blog. No, I don’t use any other services. I just watch your Twitter posts & pick up articles from there.

    • Wim says:

Thanks Rich. You can also subscribe to the RSS feed if you use that. I use Feed Demon to follow blogs and it’s a great tool. So easy and practical.

    Wim,

Do whatever is going to make things better for you!

    • Wim says:

Thanks Danny. It’s manly a security thing. Too many plugins on one blog and they start fighting and messing things up for the WP core. So I’m trying to cut down a bit.

  5. To be completly honest, I did not know it was there untill you mentioned it

    • Wim says:

Thanks Marc. That says a lot about the usefulness of the cloud, right there. If people don’t even see it, there’s little point to it.
