Blood & Bone
ByI just saw this one here:
It doesn’t have a great script, not by a long shot, but Michael Jay White plays the lead. I always liked his movies and his action scenes are usually pretty good. I enjoyed them in this flick here too. He moves surprisingly well for a guy his size.
You definitely see the influence MMA has had on recent movies as the fights are no longer all about punching and kicking: There’s several ground fighting sequences and some nifty tricks I hadn’t seen in movies before. Cool.
Some more cool things in this movie:
- Bob Sapp gets beat up in it.
- Kimbo Slice gets beat up in it.
- Gina Carano does some beating up in it.

Gina Carano about to open a can of whup-ass...
What’s not to like?
.
I got my Popcorn out! Just plainfun.
I am being filtered? Why?
No idea what you’re talking about Danny. Why do you think you’re being filtered?
It’s a little strange to see choreographed groundfighting. Nice kicks though.
I agree, it is a bit weird to see the groundgame like that. But OTOH, it allows them to do some cool stuff. I liked this movie better than Red Belt, which was all about grappling, supposedly.
I too liked this movie, but I would not say better than Redbelt. I think you missed what Redbelt was about if you think it was all about grappling.
My take on Redbelt follows: Brazillian Jujitsu was just the art that was used to explore the dichotomy between the art and the sport, honor and greed, etc., etc.
There was no real overarching high aim in this film other than to showcase Mr. Jamal White’s grace and abilities.
Nono, I got the whole things about Red Belt. I just meant that the fight scenes in it (which were supposed to highlight grappling arts) didn’t really do it for me. I thought the ones in B&B were filmed better and clearer. The story is almost non-existant, I agree. It’s pure entertainment, no deeper message.
For me, Red Belt went to the opposite side of that scale: Loads more depth but the fight scenes weren’t all that interesting. Then again, I think Rex Kwon Do fight scenes are the best ever so it may just be me…
I love the title — I remember using that phrase, “blood and bones” in reference to a martial arts match, in a book I wrote some years ago, Matadora.
And White is always fun to watch.
Steve
Steve, the Matador series is on my reading list. Looking forward to it.
Hi Wim,
Looks like another cool flick to bone up on.
“To bone up on”… Lol!
