Here is a sample of some weird martial arts skills. Personally, I don’t see the point in some of them but that doesn’t mean they aren’t impressive. Take a look:
The catching arrows part is bullshit IMO. Great timing, yes. But I’d love to see him try that when somebody is shooting at him for real with one of these puppies. I doubt he’d do just as good. But still, cool trick to watch.
The nunchaku guy was also cool, great precision. But as weapons go, I never liked it. I’ll take a medieval flail over it any day. If you try the one and then right after the other, you’ll notice the difference. Before you start, yes, I know you can do more with the nunchaku than just swing it.
The guy who was spitting whatever the hell he had in his mouth was also wicked cool. Not very practical as self defense (“Please wait Mr. Mugger, I have to put this in my mouth first…”) but nicely done.
Hope you enjoyed this example of weird stuff as much as I did. Props to Dave for finding it.

He was spitting ice.

Cool, thanks.

If I was attacked by someone while I was armed with a set of nunchaku, I’d had it over to my assailant and watch him beat himself to death with it.
I put a lot of energy when I was young, into getting a handle on those infernal things. I did more damage to myself than I could ever hope to inflict on an opponent.
I watched a friend flail around with triple sticks once. He managed to twirl them where first one free end hit him in the forehead, then the other free end; knocking him out.

I tried it as a kid, after watching Bruce Lee do it, of course. Failed miserably and never looked back. :-)

If i could throw like the guy at 2.20 i would walk away with al the prices at the funfair, by ball throwing.
Josh Skinner (donjitsu2) says
The spitting skill was cool. Paul Dong, in one of his books, talked about about several local martial artists from his childhood.
One guy he mentioned could perform a similar skill. However, the way Dong tells it the guy could spit so hard the water itself could be used as a weapon.
Seemed far fetched but this video leads me to believe that there was more to the story than what was in Paul Dong’s book.

Dunno Josh. One of the effects adrenal stress sometimes causes is a dry mouth. So I’m not sure it’s a worthwhile skill to pursue. Personally, I’ prefer to practice my Nike-fu and run fiercly. :-)

I love the ice spitter. That was pretty awesome. Can you imagine the attention you’d get at parties?
John W. Zimmer says
Hey Wim!
I used to catch pencils in my toes… I think that measures up to the arrow catching. You know if ever Pan tried to shoot me – I have a defense! :)
Wim says
Ha, good luck with that John! ;-)
