Coolest Lion Dance ever

Check out this cool lion dance these guys did for the Chinese New Year.

I’m sure the purists will not appreciate what they did but I think it’s pretty cool. Tradition is important, but a dead tradition becomes obsolete quickly. These guys mix both old and new. And I’m sure they’re not going to toss out all the original requirements in favor of only shuffling.

So here’s a tip of the hat to them for a great performance.

Props to Restita for this cool find.

    Hi Wim,
I had the opportunity to discuss the same video here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/102510418958375940310/posts/EtgXR7E5KWz

Basically, I think that it’s not a matter of change vs tradition (since without change, any tradition would die), but which changes are good and which ones only hasten the process of making something meaningless and obsolete.
    In this instance:
Modern dance instead of martial arts stances? Could be a good change. I’m not a fan but I can see where it comes from.
Using tigers instead of lions (just because the name of the sponsor)? That’s a big no no for me.

    My 0.2 cents

    • Hi Stefano,

I don’t really have a vested interest in this as in the arts I practice, there is no lion dance involved. That said, I see bot hsides of the coin. But in my personal opinion, this video was just funny. I see it as the practitioner’s trying to do something cool and get attention. Nothing wrong with that, IMO.
